Our History
The heritage of Chicagoland’s Human Resource Association reaches back to October 14, 1920 when the Employment Manager’s Club was formed under the auspices of the Chicago Metal Trades Association.
Growth of the Employment Managers Club through the 20’s and 30's paralleled Chicago's significant growth as a nationwide metal trades center. In the late 1930’s, as the country was coming out of a severe depression, the name was changed to Employment Executives Club to better reflect the broadened responsibilities of the position coupled with its growth and stature in most member organizations.
The industrial period following World War II presented many new and different challenges to the members of the Employment Executives Club. Significant changes in the members duties and responsibilities created the need to make the organization name more reflective of the members assigned activities. As a result, in December of 1964, the name was officially changed to the Midwest Personnel Management Association (MPMA).
In July of 1994, MPMA established its own administrative function as part of a strategic move to operate as an independent association. On September 10, 1996, MPMA was chartered as a chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management. The Management Association of Illinois (the original sponsor with a new name) provided support and assistance for this change and continues today as a supportive sponsor and one of our affiliated organizations.
MPMA continued under that name until June 24, 1998, when the Electronics Personnel Association of Chicago was merged into MPMA. At that time, the name was changed to MPMA-EPA, Chicagoland’s Human Resource Association. Then, on July 1, 2000, our members approved a final name change to Chicagoland’s Human Resource Association.
Our association has seen and experienced a revolution in the dynamics of what is now called human resources. Our commitment to the future is to help prepare our members for these new challenges through excellent execution of our mission.
